Location Scout VR Pano: Kayaking Lake Sebago, Harriman State Park, NY
We kayak and location scout Lake Sebago often. The dock can get crowded with people fishing off the dock (they aren’t sposed to…) But eventually you can get your boat in the water and take off across the lake 🙂 Lake Sebago is fairly large so even on a busy day with lots of boats on the water, one can typically find secluded areas to explore and admire wildlife, such as egrets, cormorants, turtles, fish and even American Bald Eagles occasionally.
There are a number of group camps along the shores of Lake Sebago, including the former Baker Camp (now an AMC Camp), American Canoe Association Camp and a group camp near the dock simply known as, “Lake Sebago Group Camp“. The camps all have sleeping facilities in cabins and lodges for group gatherings and meals.
Being a part of Harriman State Park, there are hiking trails in vast woods that surround the dock and camps.
As far as filming at Lake Sebago, my experience has been the dock parking lot is not typically the first facility the Palisades Interstate Park Commission Film Permit Office offers as an option, likely for several reasons: The dock parking lot is not especially large (especially for a full-size film production company) and there is a tricky turn into the parking lot from the driveway. For smaller projects I imagine Lake Sebago parking lot might clear, case-by-case tho. The former Baker Camp was film-friendly, AMC recently took over Baker Camp and is currently renovating the facility, will be interesting to see how it changes and whether of not filming will be continued to be allowed.
Lake Sebago is not far from Bear Mountain Dock
Lake Sebago – Wikipedia
At 310 acres (1.3 km2), Lake Sebago is the largest lake in Harriman State Park in the U.S. state of New York. The name is Algonquian for “big water”. Operated by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, Lake Sebago is surrounded by picnic lawns and play fields, and is popular with anglers fishing for bass, perch and sunfish. The lake has a swimming beach, hand boat launch (electric motors only) and cabin camping. Lake Sebago lies mostly in the Town of Haverstraw in Rockland County, although small parts extend into the Town of Ramapo and into Orange County’s Town of Tuxedo. It is located just south of Lake Kanawauke and is accessible by auto from Seven Lakes Drive.
